Cooling tower experience 

Throughout his career, Barry has worked closely with cooling tower building managers, duly qualified persons, water treatment specialists, and NSW Local Health Districts. As an authorised officer, he provided expert advice to the public and building managers on Legionella risks and effective reduction strategies to minimise risk to as low as reasonably practicable.

Barry's experience includes coordinating and investigating confirmed legionnaires outbreaks, conducting hundreds of cooling tower audits/site inspections in the Sydney CBD, and maintaining registers of high-risk cooling tower systems within the Local Government Area. He has also played a pivotal role in managing high-risk cooling tower closures and single-handedly brought affected cooling tower systems back up to the required standards. This involved coordinating responses from occupiers, water treatment specialists, and independent water sampling contractors to swiftly resolve issues with minimal disruption to business operations.

Food Safety experience

Barry's extensive background in food safety regulation spans both the UK and Australia, encompassing the auditing of various food premises, ranging from aged care facilities and hospitals to EC approved manufacturers and retail establishments such as cafés, fine dining restaurants, and hotel chains.

His practical food safety expertise is complemented by high-risk auditing qualifications and formal enforcement experience, including issuing prohibition/closure orders, improvement notices, and penalty infringement notices (on-the-spot fines), as well as successful prosecutions. With a strong emphasis on the enforcement of the Food Standards Code, Barry can provide detailed guidance on achieving compliance and proactive measures to prevent such actions in the first instance i.e. prevention is better than cure.

Throughout his local government experience, Barry has developed and managed food safety initiatives, conducted food sampling projects using aseptic techniques, environmental swabbing, and ATP swabbing. His campaign findings have been presented at Environmental Health Australia (EHA) conferences and have contributed to the production of new statewide guidance materials prepared by the NSW Food Authority.
